Cyber Security for small businesses

As Cyber Security Awareness Month presses ahead, a reminder to small businesses is the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) Cyber Aware campaign that helps make the UK the safest place to live and work online.

By completing the NCSC's Cyber Action Plan, small businesses and organisations will receive a tailored list of actions to help protect them online.

Using the NCSC's new Check Your Cyber Security service, small businesses and

organisations will be able to:

  • Check their internet-connected computers and systems for vulnerabilities to ransomware.
  • Receive advice on how to help mitigate any cyber risks.
  • Tell them if their web browser is up to date.

The tool is free, quick, and easy to use and provides tailored feedback which flags specific weaknesses, the risks they pose and how to fix them. It is designed for small organisations with little resources to dedicate to cyber.

New Tipping law for workers: Updated Fact sheet now available

Under a new law, businesses are banned from withholding gratuity payments from staff. This means that all tips from customers, whether given in cash or by card, must be shared between workers. The law aims to benefit over three million workers in restaurants, cafes, pubs, hairdressers, and taxis. It came into force on Tuesday 1 October 2024.

NHBF Members can download the updated factsheet in our shop here.

Campaigning for you – meeting with Small Business Minister

Ahead of the Autumn Budget on 30 October, NHBF had a positive introductory meeting with Gareth Thomas MP, Minister for Services, Small Businesses and Exports this week. He also has responsibility for the Personal Care sector.

We discussed key topics including the current state of the sector, the positive contribution it makes to the economy, jobs and wellbeing, encouraging sector apprenticeships, support for employers and issues around disguised employment.
