NHBF update: understanding the upcoming aesthetics regulatory changes

As the voice of the hair and beauty sector, the National Hair & Beauty Federation (NHBF) is committed to keeping members fully informed about important regulatory changes affecting aesthetics practitioners.

Key changes coming in 2025

The recent announcement from the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) represents just one part of broader regulatory reforms affecting the aesthetics industry:

  1. Mandatory face-to-face consultations: From June 1, 2025, all nursing and midwifery prescribers must conduct in-person consultations before prescribing non-surgical cosmetic medicines, including anti-wrinkle injections and aesthetic emergency kit items.
  2. Health & Care Act implementation: Secondary legislation under the Act is being developed to standardize:
    ● Training requirements and minimum qualifications
    ● Practitioner registration and verification processes
    ● Insurance standards specific to aesthetics procedures
    ● Mandatory emergency protocols and equipment
  3. Level entry playing field: New pathways are being established to ensure beauty professionals can progress into advanced aesthetics without facing unfair barriers, provided they meet the same competency standards.
  4. Premises standards: Forthcoming regulations will establish consistent requirements for facilities where procedures are performed, regardless of whether they are medical clinics or beauty salons.
