The NHBF’s industry statistics for 2018 show that only florists have higher rates of work-related skin diseases than beauty therapists, with hairdressers and barbers coming a close third. The most common cause of injury in work places is slips, trips and falls – and beauty salons are no exception.
To help you keep your team safe and healthy, the NHBF has launched a new toolkit, which contains everything a beauty salon needs to comply with health and safety legislation. It contains:
The NHBF’s new Guide to Health and Safety for Beauty Salons
- a template health and safety policy
- a suite of risk assessments
- guidelines for workers
- a fire safety checklist
- a factsheet on qualifications and age restrictions
- plus the health and safety poster which must be displayed by law, a first aid kit, accident book, fire and first aid notices.
Local authorities are responsible for enforcing health and safety for salons. Working with Milton Keynes Council, as the Primary Authority, the toolkit has ‘assured advice’ status. This means it is nationally recognised by all local authorities to make sure salon health and safety requirements are consistent across the UK.
Paying attention to health and safety makes good business sense.
NHBF chief executive Hilary Hall said: “Paying attention to health and safety makes good business sense. If you have a member of staff who is absent from the workplace because of illness or injury which could have been prevented, this has a financial cost to your business as well as putting added pressure onto other team members.”
The toolkits are available for Members £80 plus £4.50 postage and packing and to non-members at £115 plus £4.50 postage and packing. Smaller packs are also available for salons which already have the poster, a first aid kit, accident book, fire and first aid notices.
Health and safety products can be ordered here from the NHBF online shop.
