The NHBF industry statistics for 2019 reported that over the last five years there has been a 74% growth in the number of beauty salons.  After barbershops, beauty salons are the most popular start-up business.  The range of advanced beauty and non-surgical aesthetic treatments being offered to consumers also appears to be rapidly expanding.  Yet there is very little research about the popularity and types of advanced beauty and non-surgical aesthetics treatments being provided.

Advanced beauty and non-surgical aesthetic treatments include fillers, botulinum toxins, including names such as ‘Beautytox’ or ‘Beautox, microblading, micropigmentation, microneedling, IPL and laser, chemical peels, blemish removal using diathermy, PRP, IV therapy, fat freezing and PDO cogs/threads.

The NHBF and other beauty industry organisations are urging practitioners to take part in a survey to fill this big gap in the research. 

The survey asks:

  • Who provides advanced beauty and non-surgical aesthetics treatments?
  • Where do these treatments take place?
  • Which are the most common treatments?
  • What clinical oversight is provided?
  • What qualifications and training do practitioners hold?
  • Which beauty treatment trends do practitioners think will grow fastest in 2020?

All responses will be anonymous and will remain strictly confidential.

The survey findings will be presented to the new Beauty, Aesthetics and Wellbeing All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) to help the group get a better understanding of advanced beauty and aesthetics treatments.  APPGs are made up of MPs who have a particular interest in a topic and who are keen to drive change and support best practice.  After being put on hold due to the elections in December, the APPG has now re-formed.  It is co-chaired by Carolyn Harris MP and Judith Cummins MP and is sponsored by the National Hair & Beauty Federation (NHBF). The APPG aims to:

  • Celebrate the power of the British beauty industry and promote the industry as a force for good.
  • Highlight the substantial contribution it makes to the UK economy (£27bn in 2018) and the rich and flexible employment opportunities it offers.
  • Explore some of the challenges the industry faces and to lobby for change and a more beautiful future.

Over the coming months the APPG will be holding a series of panel sessions on different aspects of the beauty industry, including sustainability, aging, diversity, wellbeing, women and work, body image and ethics.

Caroline Larissey, NHBF Director of Quality & Standards said, “The research will give the APPG vital insight into the beauty and aesthetics treatments available and who provides them.  To support practitioners and to protect the safety of the public, we need to ensure that qualifications, training and high-quality guidance are in place.”
