NHBF attends ministerial roundtable on key issues facing the personal care sector

The National Hair & Beauty Federation (NHBF) attended a Ministerial roundtable meeting with government leaders to address pressing issues and policies impacting the UK's Personal Care industry.

At the roundtable, on 22^nd April our Chief executive, Caroline Larissey, spoke directly with Minister Kevin Hollinrake, his advisors and senior representative, to voice the concerns and proposals of the NHBF's thousands of Member businesses across the hair and beauty sector.

NHBF industry research and statistics 2023

The NHBF’s annual industry statistics for 2023 are now available.

The NHBF’s annual industry statistics offer a valuable overview of the state of the hair, beauty and barbering industries in the UK. The data in the report includes success rates, turnover, start-up numbers, working patterns, apprenticeships, age, gender and industry trends.

The cost of beauty campaign

The Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) has launched a new campaign to warn consumers about the potential dangers of using certain illegal and unsafe cosmetic products.

With more people opting to save money by doing their cosmetic treatments at home, CTSI is spotlighting the serious - even life-altering - effects that can happen when opting for illegal products, or when products are not administered by a trained professional.

The three areas the campaign focuses on are:

1.  NAILS - UV Gel and L&P Nail kits

2.  SKIN - Skin Lightening Creams

3.  TEETH - Illegal Teeth Whitening kits.

Low pay commission UK visits 2024

The Low Pay Commission (LPC) is an independent statutory Non-Departmental Public Body set up under the National Minimum Wage Act 1998 to advise the Government on the National Minimum Wage (NMW).

They are on the lookout for companies that might be interested in speaking to the commissioners about the impact of minimum wages on their business.  From 1 April 2024, the minimum has increased to £11.44 for those over 21-year-olds which is nearly a 10% increase from last year.  There are also adjustments for other age groups as shown in the link here.

How will the latest announcement affect your business planning?  How would you respond to the rising NMW?  LPC is also interested in talking to companies that are trying to raise their productivity, to showcase their learning journeys in their communication platforms.  The oral evidence given by the companies will be collated along with the research statistics for LPC to make their yearly recommendations to the government about the minimum wage.
