HMRC launches VAT Registration Estimator
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has launched a digital tool to help businesses estimate what registering for VAT may mean for them.
The VAT Registration Estimator has been developed after feedback from small businesses suggested an online tool would be helpful to show when their turnover could require businesses to register for VAT and its effect on profits.
A business must register for VAT if:
- their total VAT taxable turnover for the previous 12 months is more than £90,000 -known as the ‘VAT threshold' - until 31 March 2024, which was £85,000.
- they expect their turnover to go over the £90,000 VAT threshold in the next 30 days.
- they are an overseas business not based in the UK and supply goods or services to the UK (or expect to in the next 30 days) – regardless of VAT taxable turnover.
- A VAT-registered business must charge VAT on eligible sales and can usually reclaim it on eligible purchases. There are around 300,000 new VAT registrations each year.
Back to Work plan will help drive economic growth in every region
During a recent visit to Leeds, Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall reaffirmed the Government's commitment to its Back to Work plan outlined in the manifesto. She emphasised the importance of addressing economic inactivity as a key focus in the Government's mission to bolster the economy.
The new Work and Pensions Secretary highlighted the critical role of the Government's back-to-work plan in driving economic growth during a visit to Leeds with the Ministerial team. Liz Kendall stressed that addressing economic inactivity is a top priority, adding that Mayors and local areas would lead the charge for change.
This visit followed a recent speech by the Chancellor outlining immediate actions to strengthen the foundations of the economy, rebuild Britain, and enhance the prosperity of all regions across the country.
In the days leading up to the visit, Chancellor Rachel Reeves MP unveiled the Government's initial steps to ensure sustainable economic growth as the pathway to enhancing the prosperity and living standards of working people nationwide.
