NHBF backs Not 'Just' A Hairdresser campaign

The UK's largest trade body for the hair & beauty sector is delighted to announce that it is supporting a landmark ad campaign designed to change people's perceptions of a career in hairdressing.

In supporting the Not 'Just' A Hairdresser campaign, Caroline Larissey, Director of Quality and Standards, said: "This is exactly the type of initiative our industry needs, and we encourage all our Members to register on the database if they are looking for apprentices. We are excited that the forthcoming ad campaign will show the huge variety of opportunities hairdressing can offer and showcase this excellent industry as an attractive and respected career choice."

Government support for energy bills begins for households and businesses

Since 01 October, households, businesses and public sector organisations across the country will be protected from significant rises in energy bills as government support begins.

The Energy Price Guarantee reduces household energy bills over the next two years, with a typical family paying around £2,500, saving £1,000 per year.

Businesses, charities and public sector organisations will also be protected through the Government's Energy Bill Relief Scheme from October over the next six months.

This support is equivalent to the Energy Price Guarantee for households. Similarly, it discounts the price per unit of gas and electricity, meaning businesses and others will pay wholesale energy costs below half of expected prices for this winter.

APPG on Beauty and Wellbeing launches inquiry into complementary therapies

The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Beauty and Wellbeing, a cross-party group of MPs, has launched an investigation into the value of complementary therapies in supporting everyone's physical health, mental health and wellbeing and taking pressure off the NHS.

Co-chaired by Carolyn Harris MP and Judith Cummins MP, the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Beauty and Wellbeing (APPG BAW) will explore how complementary therapies can support everyone's health, evaluate the skills gaps facing the industry, consider how to ensure the viability of businesses and jobs, and review potential government interventions to support the sector's future.

The Group is launching a call for written evidence to understand better:

  • the value the sector brings to the UK's economy and society
  • how complementary treatments can play a preventative role in supporting people's health and wellbeing or support those with existing health conditions
  • how the NHS can be better integrated with the sector
  • the skills gap facing the industry and how we can attract talent
  • how has the pandemic changed demand for these services
  • how to ensure the long-term growth of the sector and ensure those that work in it can make a good wage.

The NHBF supports the APPG and its work, and we will give oral and written evidence to the inquiry.

The APPG on Beauty, Aesthetics and Wellbeing is a useful tool to improve the knowledge of Parliamentarians/MPs about the sector and lobby the Government with our key recommendations for future action, particularly around skills.

The terms of reference, call for evidence questions and information on how to submit a response are available on the Group's website here.

'Get the Jump' Skills for Life campaign

The 'Get the Jump' Skills for Life campaign brings together, for the first time, all education and training choices for young people in one place.

For anyone, taking the next step in life can feel daunting. But for a 14–19-year-old young person, making a decision today that could affect the rest of their life can be overwhelming and daunting.

With too much or not enough information about their choices, young people can struggle to move forward confidently, taking a 'safe' route or settling for a path they perhaps wouldn't have, had they known the full range of pathways open to them.

A range of government programmes are available for employers considering hiring employees, offering work experience or upskilling existing staff – for example, apprenticeships, traineeships and T-Level industry placements.

'Join the Skills Revolution' is a multi-channel campaign which aims to increase small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) awareness and consideration of these programmes and to drive action to increase uptake.

The campaign webpage features an overview of the full range of government training and employment schemes employers might be interested in.

2nd Cost of Living Payment

The Government has announced that households receiving DWP benefits will receive the second part of the £650 Cost of Living Payment from 08 November and continuing through to 23 November. More information can be found at GOV.UK

Please note a small number of payments will be made on 08 November, with numbers increasing significantly from the 9th. Eligible customers who receive tax credits and no other eligible benefits will be paid shortly after DWP payments by HMRC.

The second payment of £324 will automatically be paid into the bank accounts of those eligible in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland who receive a qualifying benefit, meaning they will not need to do anything to receive the money.
