The number and variety of beauty treatments is changing all the time, making it hard for salons to keep up with the qualifications and training therapists need before they can offer treatments to clients, safe in the knowledge they are covered by insurance.
The NHBF has published a comprehensive guide on qualifications and training for advanced beauty treatments including:
- Botox and dermal fillers
- Lasers and IPL
- Chemical peels
- Microneedling, derma rolling, skin needling
- Micropigmentation
- Microblading
- Electrolysis
- Standard beauty treatments requiring qualifications at level 3 or below
We make sure therapists providing treatments have the skills they need to protect client safety and to be covered by insurance for treatment risks
Caroline Larissey, NHBF’s lead for quality and standards, said, “I talk to beauty salon owners all the time and they are crying out for guidance on this crucial issue. It’s made more complicated because things are changing so fast, so the qualifications we need don’t yet exist. We’ve included options for qualifications which are available, coupled with manufacturer’s training courses, to make sure therapists providing treatments have the skills they need to protect client safety and to be covered by insurance for treatment risks.”
As well as covering qualifications, the guide also covers recommended age restrictions which is also an area of confusion.
Local authorities are responsible for enforcing health and safety for salons. Working with Milton Keynes Council, as the Primary Authority, the guide is nationally recognised by all local authorities so their requirements are consistent across the UK.
The free guide is essential reading for anyone looking for insurance cover, especially for advanced beauty treatments.
Because this is an industry first in a fast-changing environment, the NHBF welcomes feedback and queries via enquiries@nhf.info The guide is available to Members and non-members as a free download here.
The guide is available in printed format as part of the NHBF’s health and safety toolkit for beauty salons, which also has ‘assured advice’ status. The toolkit is available to Members at £80 plus £10 postage and packing and to non-members £115 plus £10 postage and packing.
