We are excited to present a Q&A with Norman Boulton, an award-winning hairstylist, and this year’s host of the NHBF’s Top 100 Influencer event. Norman, who ranked 28th in last year’s competition, shares his inspiring journey into the world of hair and beauty, the impact of social media on his career, and valuable advice for aspiring hairstylists.

1. Tell us about your journey into the world of hair and beauty. How did you get into it? What made you embark on this career?

My interest in the world of hair was sparked by my big sister. I vividly remember being amazed by her technique of creating curls with a round brush when I was a young teen. At 15, with my prom suit on and my CV in hand (thanks to my mum), I landed my first apprentice job in a top London salon in the West End. Throughout the years, I've had the privilege of working with incredibly talented individuals who have inspired and guided me. The joy I see on my client's faces when they leave the salon feeling confident and beautiful in their own skin is what keeps me going. It's incredibly satisfying to know that I get to make people happy for a living.

2. How has social media helped you and your career?

Social media has been a game-changer for me! It's like having a global portfolio that anyone can access. Platforms like Instagram allow me to showcase my work, connect with clients and other hairdressers, and share my creative process. Engaging with my followers and other professionals in the industry has opened up numerous opportunities for collaboration and growth. Receiving positive feedback and support from people all over the world has been incredibly rewarding. Social media has definitely propelled my career to new heights.

3. How did you feel about receiving the Top 100 Influencer award and how do you see its future?

Receiving the Top 100 Influencer award was surreal! It’s such an honour to be recognised for my work. This award is a testament to the hours spent creating content and maintaining a consistent social media presence. I see the future of this recognition as a means to inspire more people to put themselves out there and make a positive difference in the industry. It’s all about the ability to influence positive change with your own voice.

4. What do you think are the key issues currently facing our industry?

One of the major challenges we face is ensuring high-quality training and education. It’s crucial that we continue to invest in the next generation of stylists through apprenticeships and training programs, with wages that people can genuinely live on. We have to keep inspiring and nurturing the new generation of hairdressing talents and show them the brilliance of this industry!

5. What is your top advice for young people looking to enter our industry?

My top advice is to always be open to learning! This industry is all about creativity and continuous learning, and it never stops. Make the most of every learning opportunity, whether it’s through formal education, apprenticeships, or online tutorials. Building a strong foundation of skills is essential. Don’t hesitate to experiment and find your unique style. Most importantly, always remember why you started. The joy of making someone feel good about themselves is incredibly rewarding, and that’s what will keep you motivated and excited about your career.
