Monthly snapshots of how we lobbied for you during 2024
January: Launch of major VAT report modelling a smoothing mechanism around the VAT threshold.
February: Collaborating with other business and retail association including through meetings with the Independent Retailers Confederation (IRC) to share insights.
March: Personal Care compliance forum with HMRC to underpin the education and communications compliance campaign.
April: State of the industry survey including wages survey
May: Launch of the NHBF manifesto at a roundtable meeting with the Small Business Minister in Parliament with our agenda for the next government.
June: General Election Small Business hustings in London questioning party leads on their apprenticeships policy. Coiffeur EU meeting collaborating with colleague across Europe.
July: Oral evidence session and meeting with the Low Pay Commission to discuss our comprehensive written evidence.
August: Wolverhampton regional meeting with Low Pay Commission and NHBF member.
September: Lobbying at Labour Party Conference in Liverpool. Responded to House of lords inquiry about future skills.
October: Meeting with Gareth Thomas MP, Minister for Small Business raising key issues for the sector. Salon visit in Nottingham with Lilian Greenwood MP.
November: Online meeting with the Secretary of State for Business & Trade and Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury industrial strategy input.
December: Gave evidence to Scotland Covid inquiry. Meeting with HM Treasury about business rates reform.

In 2024, we secured the following for the sector:
- Increase in the VAT registration threshold from £85,000 to £90,000 from 1 April, taking around 28,000 small businesses out of paying VAT.
- Rise in the Employment Allowance from £5000 to £10,500 supporting micro businesses with up to 4 staff in particular
- A partial continuation of business rates support in England into 2025-26 through the 40% discount on business rates and freeze to the small business multiplier.
