Essential Requirements
When taking on an apprentice in your salon or barbershop you must ensure:
- Your apprentice has the right to work in the UK.
- You pay the correct apprenticeship rate or National Minimum Wage.
- Your apprentice is expected to work at least 30 hours a week (21 or more hours in Northern Ireland), including off-the-job training (e.g., at a college or training provider).
- Your apprentice works with experienced staff and has a proper role that enables them to gain the job-specific skills and knowledge they need.
- Your apprentice takes time out to study at a college or training provider as part of the working week.
- You have a good working relationship with the training provider and are clear about key issues such as costs, funding, how the apprenticeship will be delivered, and arrangements for off-the-job training.
- You have a signed apprenticeship agreement and a signed commitment statement, outlining how you and the training provider will work towards the successful completion of the apprenticeship. - You take the necessary steps to ensure the health and safety of your apprentice.
